A photograph of the Iwo Jima statue at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA with the Washington, DC skyline in the background. This photograph captured in December, 1999 was taken by Jim Epler in Washington, DC at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). It is cataloged under the terms cities, architecture, landscapes & vistas, art, landmarks, night scenes, urban scenes and parks & fountains in this photography database.

The image was exposed on 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 black & white film stock using a Pentax Asahi Spotmatic II camera with a Asahi Pentax 135mm f/2.5 lens.

Photographer Comments: When setting up to compose this shot, I was distraught because I could not include the top of the flag in the frame due to the limitations of my 135mm lens. However, my wider lenses did not capture enough detail in the city skyline to make me happy. All in all, I'm satisfied with the result as the final picture (sans the top of the flag) captures the power of the memorial in relation to the important national monuments present in the background.

Additionally, Jim thought of search words that someone might use to locate this picture including the terms Japan, Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Arlington VA, Joe Rosenthal, USMC, statue, world war II, Mount Suribachi and memorial, so he included these on this page as a service to himself and others who would like to download this free photograph!
