| A stack of hay bales in a field on a farm off of highway 29 on the way to Charlottesville, VA. This photograph captured in September, 1999 was taken by Jim Epler in the summer in Charlottesville, VA in a pasture adjacent to highway 29. It is cataloged under the terms objects, countryside views and rural scenes in this photography database. The image was exposed on 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 black & white film stock using a Pentax Asahi Spotmatic II camera with a Asahi Pentax 28mm f/3.5 lens stopped to f/16 and exposed at a speed of 1/125th of a second. Photographer Comments: Truthfully, I thought this shot was going to turn out better than it did. I saw the bales on my way to U.Va. one morning as I was driving south on Rt. 29. I had just purchased a Red #25 filter, which I had read that Ansel Adams used to create the illusion of a very dark sky in Penitente Morada, Coyote, New Mexico. I wanted to produce the same effect in this photograph, but failed to achieve what Ansel did in his print. What a surprise, huh? I underexposed but my guess is that to achieve this effect one must manipulate development times as well as modify exposure values. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that I've never been able to achieve this "dark sky" result with my Red 25 filter in any of my photographs. |

Additionally, Jim thought of search words that someone might use to locate this picture including the terms straw, bales, farm, field, farmer, pasture, Virginia and hay, so he included these on this page as a service to himself and others who would like to download this free photograph! |
