| A silver gelatin photograph of people moving down an metro escalator under the Post Office Pavilion in Washington, DC. This photograph captured in September, 1999 was taken by Jim Epler in Washington, DC near a metro stop at the Ronald Regan building. The image was exposed on 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 black & white film stock using a Pentax Asahi Spotmatic II camera with a Asahi Pentax 55mm f/1.8 lens. Photographer Comments: I set up my little tripod on a ledge overlooking the elevator and waited for something to happen. My goal was to grab an image that showed people moving up and down the escalators simultaneously. In fact, as I was setting up my tripod a slew of interesting people were coming up and going down the moving staircases which fueled my belief that I would capture a compelling shot. Truthfully, I was disappointed in the final image because I believed it could have been more captivating had I exhibited increased patience that particular day. I waited for approximately 10 minutes without much luck; the traffic was sporatic and mundane. Plus, the guy leaning on the ledge across the plaza kept fidgeting and acting as if he was really agitated about something. I was hoping he would leave but he didn't. It was a bit unsettling so I took what I could from the scene and moved on. |
